Lady Gaga tops the 1million mark in first-week album sales

Like Madonna or Kanye West, Lady Gaga has a knack for attracting controversy, even when the matter at hand is out of her control. “Born This Way,” the pop star’s latest release for Interscope Records, debuted atop the U.S. pop charts Wednesday with more than 1.1. million copies sold, yet that number comes with something of an asterisk.

The figure marked the best first-week album sales since 50 Cent's “The Massacre” sold 1,141,000 copies in 2005.But what was unusual was that Lady Gaga’s total was fueled by digital downloads – a high percentage of which were sold for less than individual songs from the album.

Last week, retailer Amazon.com raised eyebrows when it set the price for a download of the 14-track album at 99 cents on its May 23 release day, representing an unprecented low bargain-price discount for a marquee release. iTunes was selling a download of the album for $11.99.

Though Amazon only sold the album at that price for two days, Billboard estimated that it sold more than 440,000 albums at that price, and Nielsen SoundScan reports that overall digital sales among all retailers accounted for 60% of the first week sales of “Born This Way.”

Though the firm doesn’t break out the 662,000 downloads sold by retailer, a look at some recent major releases can put Lady Gaga’s digital sales in perspective. When Taylor Swift’s Big Machine album “Speak Now” bowed at No. 1 in November 2010 with more than 1 million copies sold, only 27% came from the digital sector. Likewise, for Eminem’s Interscope album “Recovery,” which debuted in June 2010 with more than 740,000 copies in its first week, only 34% of that tally came from the digital sector.

“Recovery” was the best-selling digital album of 2010, selling 852,000 downloads over a six-month period. The second-best selling digital album of 2010 was “Speak Now,” with 488,000 downloads.

Executives at Universal Music Group, which distributes the Gaga album, could not be reached for comment. Additionally, calls to Amazon were unreturned.

Labels, however, cannot dictate the price at which Amazon sells an album. As with past Amazon promotions, the retailer sold “Born This Way” as a loss-leader, paying full wholesale price for the album. The industry trade magazine Billboard, which publishes the U.S. pop chart, noted that Amazon paid $8.40 for each digital copy it sold, and estimated that Amazon sold more than 440,000 downloads at the 99-cent price.

More traditional retailers have become used to such tactics. Eric Levin, who heads indie retail consortium the Association of Independent Media Stores, simply noted that for the consumer, “owning the highest resolution recording for around $9.99, that you own in perpetuity and have the right to re-sell, is a better bargain in the long run.”

First-week digital discounts last year propelled indie rockers the Arcade Fire to the top of the pop charts when Amazon set the price of the act’s Grammy-winning album “The Suburbs” at $3.99. At the time, Laura Balance, co-owner of the act’s label Merge Records, said, “I find the resistance I had five years ago to music getting cheap is being broken down over the years by relentless pressure. People want to pay less.”

Yet Lady Gaga’s 99-cent sale was more striking in that individual tracks from the album were being sold at $1.29 at Apple’s iTunes store. The album’s self-titled single, for instance, has sold more than 4.2 million copies, many of them at $1.29, according to SoundScan data.

Amazon wasn’t shy about its reasoning, putting out a press release that touted the promotion and the fact that the purchase of the album came with a free 20 gigs of storage for Amazon’s Cloud Drive, which allows users to store and playback their music via the Web and in the form of an app for Google Android phones and tablets. The company even touted that it was not able to meet demand for the 99-cent album, as many customers had difficulty downloading the album on its release day.

“Clearly customers are really excited for Lady Gaga's new album -- we saw extraordinary response to Monday's promotion -- far above what we expected -- she definitely melted some servers,” Craig Pape, director of music for Amazon, said in a statement.

Some questioned whether Billboard should factor the 99-cent downloads into its chart, forcing editorial director Bill Werde to post an online editorial defending the trade’s decision not to revise its policies.

Wrote Werde,”Who's to say that in three years or three months or even three weeks that the accepted value of an album won't be 99 cents? I realize that's an alarming (and unlikely, at least in weeks or months) thought.… But the decline in the perceived value of recorded music is not exactly a secret in 2011.”

The “Telephone” singer sat down with Us magazine and revealed that the song sparks up emotions because she wrote “You and I” based on her and Luc’s relationship.Gaga went on to explain, "There is not one song on any of my records that wasn't written by me, and I think when you write your own music you find ways to reinvent [the songs] emotionally through yourself and performance so that they are different every night and that song you know, sometimes it's about the guys and sometimes its about the fans.”

The 25-year-old also wants all of her fans to know that - while writing music for her latest album “Born This Way” - she "licked and touched and kissed and made love to every single note and melody and lyric on that album."

Lady Gaga and her team have launched a formal strategy to spread her brand in the booming, Bollywood-crazed India market. The team has tapped the founders of Desi Hits, a New York-based media company that produces and distributes entertainment content targeted at South Asians all over the world, to help build her brand, particularly in India but also in the large South Asian diaspora.

"The reason I'm going to India now is because I can," said Lady Gaga, who has the nickname "Fame Monster" because of her candid admission of wanting to spread her music and name across the globe. "I didn't have the money or the resources before to travel and bring all of my things with me and reach an entire new territory of fans."The push into India is part of the massive marketing and social-media machine the Lady Gaga team has created around the release of her third album, "Born This Way." The campaign includes partnerships with companies including Starbucks Corp. and online giveaways of remixes, videos and tracks. It has inspired companies such as Amazon.com Inc. and Best Buy Co. to find creative ways to leverage the popularity of Gaga's music to their benefit. For example, Amazon.com sold the album for just 99 cents to promote its new online music storage service, a move that led to such strong demand that Amazon's servers were overloaded.

"She's expanding her base," said Troy Carter, Lady Gaga's manager. "In the last album cycle we toured a lot of places in the world, but there were still some territories that we weren't able to go and spend time and really work. India was one of those places."

Lady Gaga is only the latest U.S. entertainer who have turned to Desihits to help crack the India market. Others include Britney Spears, 50 Cent, Akon and Enrique Iglesias. India is an appealing target for entertainers, as it has 700 million people under the age of 30.

Hey, remember when Johnny Depp surprised a group of kids in London by showing up at their school in character as Captain Jack Sparrow? Well, this story is kind of the opposite of that one. A staff developer who works for Tenafly Elementary Schools in New Jersey is in hot water for promising kids an appearance by Lady Gaga herself — then delivering a Lady Gaga impersonator instead.The district employee told administrators that she’s friends with Lady Gaga and that the star would give an anti-bullying presentation to the district’s third, fourth, and fifth graders via Skype. But at the eleventh hour, according to the developer, the First Lady of Pop suddenly wasn’t available — so she hired a Lady Gaga impersonator to give the talk and hoped none of the students would notice the difference. (Michael Ranaldi, a fourth grader, told his mother that “he thought the presentation was weird because the woman was wearing glasses and typing all of the answers to questions supposedly because her microphone was disabled.” Verrry sneaky.) The staffer also gave the kids photos of the star supposedly signed by Gaga herself.

I can’t help but think that maybe this is all an elaborate plan to get the real Lady Gaga to show up in Tenafly. After all, the singer does have a reputation for being good to her fans, and nobody loves stunts more than she does. It wouldn’t be surprising, then, if the Lady decides to make good on the developer’s promise upon hearing the Saga of Fake Gaga. Either way, I’m betting the kids aren’t too upset; the presentation and the resulting scandal are probably the most exciting things to happen to North Jersey’s elementary schools since, well… ever.

Lady Gaga Has 'Rocked the Zeitgeist'

Even though it took some doing, "Weird Al" Yankovic has no hard feelings towards Lady Gaga over the struggle to release "Perform This Way," his parody of her hit "Born This Way" and the first single from his forthcoming new album "Alpocalypse."

Gaga's manager had initially refused permission for Yankovic to release "Perform This Way," but Yankovic says things changed once Gaga herself heard the song.

"Even though her manager was presenting it as such, she had never once approached Gaga, so it was news to her when people were...asking, 'How come you're not letting Weird Al do his parody?' " Yankovic tells Billboard.com. "She was not aware of it at all, and when she actually did hear the song she loved it and gave me permission."Yankovic adds, "This is unfortunately not an isolated incident over the course of my career...I find it's better, whenever possible, to go directly to an artist and deal with them personally, but as it turns out I didn't happen to have Lady Gaga's home phone number or e-mail address."

Yankovic did hasten the process by posting the song on YouTube during the negotiations -- but only, he says, because it was the first time a manager had insisted on hearing an actual recording rather than simply reviewing a lyric sheet. "I'd never done that before," he explains. "I figured if you already have the lyrics, if you don't find those offensive then you're not going to find it offensive when you hear the fully produced version of it -- which is why I was kind of knocked for a loop when the answer we got back was 'no.' "

Lady Gaga appears on the cover of the latest Rolling Stone with the cutline "Monster Goddess," which isn't quite right: When you get down to it, Gaga is not her own deity but rather a congregant, a preacher, an apostle. She calls her intense, theatrical concert performances "church." She wears large, costume-piece crucifixes.

Given her looming, still-growing presence in pop culture, we all have a stake in wondering: an apostle for what? Few would say Jesus, even though she believes in him; we know this because she told Larry King. We also know this because she says so in a few different places on the newly released Born This Way, which just enjoyed the best-selling first week for any CD in the past six years.Gaga will not call herself a Christian, and while it's clear that her reverence for the man who was Christ isn't a pose (no one gains anything if she's feigning a line like, "There's only three men that I'mma serve my whole life / It's my daddy, and Nebraska, and Jesus Christ"), it also comes across as mere biography. The human formerly known as Stephanie Germanotta was raised Catholic but is now searching: "I'm a quite religious woman that is very confused about religion," was another line she used on King.

Out of this confusion comes Born This Way's cobbled-together but coherent personal theology. Throughout, Gaga latches onto Christian tropes but ups their approachability with statements like, "It doesn't matter if you love him or capital H-I-M." The religious redecorating starts on the very first track, which stars Gaga in a non-traditional wedding. "I'm going to marry the night," she tells us repeatedly, first over space-fantasy synth twinkles and then over a skyscraping, fuzz-swathed club pulse. She's a "loser" and a "sinner," but in the late-night streets of New York City, in the fishnet-friendly bars and on beat-up backseats, she has found the guy--wait, girl--wait, moment in time and space--that she wants to be with for eternity.

"Marry the Night," and most of the tracks that follow, posit that salvation comes by taking charge of one's own identity and remaining unapologetic. The references are often biblical, yet the message plays as new-agey. This is why Born Your Way may end up being as culturally significant as Gaga--never coy about her ambitions of importance--wants it to be. Through her lyrics, she promotes living with religion in the same way that kids-these-days increasingly seem to live: holding onto the trappings of how she was raised, but embracing a philosophy of unquestioning acceptance and strident self-determination.

This contrast between the Christian specificity and love-yourself boilerplate in Gaga's lyrics and public persona has, of course, has gotten her called a blasphemer, megalomaniac, and faker. But more weirdly, a common reaction from Christian critics (Westboro Baptists not included) has been a tired "meh." The Catholic League's Bill Donohue, who's built a career on pooh-poohing shock-art interpreters of the crucifix, seemed bored when he came on Fox News in April to chat about Gaga's deliciously abrasive single "Judas." He said he recognized that Gaga wasn't corrupting kids, and that her use of Christian iconography was fairly empty. "I don't like the copycatting of Madonna," was among his more-potent complaints.

Gaga-Madonna comparisons like Donohue's are played out--yes, both singers are ethnic Italians, raised Catholic, and artistically chameleonic--but remain instructive. For example, compare Born This Way with 1989's Like a Prayer. Both are self-consciously artsy statements that lean heavily on their creators' Catholic backgrounds. But Like a Prayer was about relationship politics, with the psychodrama stemming from Madonna's bouts with unwanted guilt: On "Oh Father," Madonna excoriates her emotionally abusive dad, and then, at the end, starts singing that she may have been too harsh on the guy.

Gaga, on the other hand, luxuriates in the absence of guilt. Again and again on Born This Way, she encourages her "Little Monsters"--these are her fans--to reject, defy, outwit, and ignore external judges of behavior: parents, boyfriends, kids at school. But internal shame--vestigial Catholic guilt, held over from Sunday School--for, say, premarital sex, dressing funny, hooking up with members of one's own gender? For Gaga, such feelings are incomprehensible. She is certain of her own righteousness; her emotional enemy is not shame but insecurity.

And crucially, for all of Gaga's talk of universal love, Born This Way promotes tribalism. Search for the right clique, she says, to validate your own weirdness. "The album is about rebirth in every sense," Gaga recently told the Financial Times' Stephen Fry. "It's about being reborn again and again until you find the identity inside yourself that defines you best for who you are and that makes you most feel like a champion of life." It's both fitting and shocking to hear Gaga describe her own message this way. In the end, pop's reigning provocateur is her own breed of born-again.

Yes, the gal that inspired me and my Georgie Girl to create our own stage show, has reached 1.1 million sales for her new “Born this Way” CD! Oh, I didn’t tell you of our stage show? You probably think that my Georgie Girl can’t do a stage show because he ain’t got no teeth, but I’m the writer, and I wrote it in. I even got his useless dad to work the lights. The name of the show is: “Lady Gum Gum: Style Breeds Hate” and it is about my Georgie Girl being a diva with no teeth. OMG!

I know that a lot of people said that she stole Madonna’s style, but even though they are both divas and both strong women, you can tell them apart. She didn’t steal anything from Madonna. They are just both strong women. Does Lady Gaga have a radio problem?

Is Lady Gaga her own worst enemy at pop radio? As the numbers show, her endless promotional tour and deep price discounts at Amazon resulted in more than 1 million copies of “Born This Way” being sold in its opening frame. So far so good.

But the weak link is radio. The star, whom BMI named songwriter of the year two weeks ago for having the most played songs at radio in 2010, is having a bit of a hiccup there.While the title track to “Born This Way” reached No. 1, second single “Judas” never got any traction at radio and sank like a stone. Third single, “The Edge of Glory,” dropped from 3-12 on the Hot 100 in its second week (expect it to rise later this week due to digital sales).

“It comes down to one basic flaw: [the new songs] just aren’t as catchy as her previous hits,” says a Top 40 DJ from the Midwest, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “The highest praise ‘Judas’ seemed to get was ‘Meh, it’s alright.’ ‘The Edge of Glory’ seems to have its fans, but I’m not sure about its long-term viability as a radio single. We dropped ‘Judas,’ but we’re still playing ‘The Edge of Glory.”

“The songs aren’t nearly as catchy,” agrees Cash, a DJ at Pulse 102, a rhythmic-leaning Top 40 station in Raleigh, N.C. “The first time I heard ‘Poker Face,’ it blew me away. ‘Just Dance ’ was another ‘one listen’ song.”

Like our midwest DJ, Cash his high hopes for “Edge of Glory,” which, despite dropping on the chart last week is still reacting well in call-out research at the station, unlike “Judas,” which got “lots of negatives on the request line.” (To be fair, Cash says “Born This Way” got negative responses too).

As our album review stated, Lady Gaga seemingly (and fearlessly) disregarded current pop radio trends when it came to making “Born This Way” and made an album that didn’t pander to radio in any way. That’s fine, that’s what a real artist does, but it can have consequences. Plus, she promoted the album primarily via television, appearing on everything from “The View” to “The Tonight Show ” and back again for months. The campaign also relied highly on tweets and her website. There was no semblance of any kind of regular radio promotional tour, although we’re the first to say the lack or airplay didn’t seem to hurt album sales.

Plus, radio is still feasting on tracks from “The Fame” and “The Fame Monster .” In fact the Midwest DJ said the only past hit not in rotation is “Alejandro.” On Pulse 102, “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance” both still garner a lot of spins, while “Paparazzi” gets trotted out from time to time.

Is there hope? Absolutely and it’s too soon to ring any true alarm .There’s still some life in “Edge of Glory”— how much remains to be seen. And our Midwest DJ has high hopes for piano ballad “U and I,” which was produced by Mutt Lange, best known for his work with Def Leppard and Shania Twain . “I think [it] will be a big hit in the Midwest, as it’s Gaga doing Nickelback,” he says. We’re not so sure what LG would think of that comparison.

Mr. Midwest also suggests one sure-fire way that we’ll know if Interscope, is starting to get a little twitchy about a lack of radio play: “Right now, the spectacle is keeping her above the fray, but if her next single suddenly has a featured artist added, you’ll know her label is starting to get uneasy.” Maybe they should put Nicki Minaj on speed dial.

Although Lady Gaga has always displayed a flamboyant and eccentric air, she has revealed that she is frightened by people who claim to be psychic.

The singer, whose Born This Way album is currently topping the charts across the world, has said that the idea of someone being able to see into her future freaks her out.

“Psychics freak me out. I’m terrified by them,” she confessed. “I was doing a show and this woman came over to me and passed a card saying, “I have something to tell you, come see me later” I was like, “No! Get away.”They maybe just wanted to tell you they liked your show?

She went on to say, “I prefer to do things in my own way rather than think something is taking that power away from me.”

Bodycount is more Lady Gaga than Call of Duty

This isn't Call of Duty. 'Gritty' realism and heavily scripted set pieces aren't what's on offer here. "It's all about guns, bullets and the effect they have on the world" says Codematers' Andy Wilson, who isn't deterred by the cramped party Bodycount is trying to crash. When I saw the game last year, it was pitched as Lady Gaga meets J. J. Abrams meets Ridley Scott - which sums the experience up quite nicely.Bodycount does look different. "The game has been designed around the colour wheel", explains Wilson. From the mustard-yellow haze of war-torn Africa, to the chrome and blood-red interiors of the Target's lair - Bodycount is a colour swatch of shooting galleries, neatly avoiding the quagmire of brown that many games of this ilk find themselves swimming in. It's no Killzone or Crysis on a technical front, but it's striking nonetheless. The bold visuals are complimented by an equally bold approach to shooting.

On several occasions, Wilson spoke of "chewing on a firefight". By this he means that the game boasts the mechanics to extend the life of your average FPS skirmish. Mastication of individual gun-fights grants the same second-to-second intensity as you'd expect from the genre's blockbusters, but with enough open space and options outside of this to avoid the corridor-like nature of Call of Duty.

'Shredding' is what separates the game from its peers, granting players the power to tear through wood, rock and stone as if it were paper. Bullets can be used to disintegrate enemy cover, leaving them open to the wrath of your firearms. This is the exact same tactic employed by your enemies, however, meaning you can't rely on one piece of cover for long. It's subsequently a very fast paced game, demanding quick wits and a quicker trigger finger.

On the arid planes of Africa, the army and militia swap bullets for turf, and as a mute operative of an organisation known only as The Network, you're caught up in the middle of it all. The dynamic AI means that sometimes one faction will win, and other times the other. Making the most out of the environment is key to survival - you don't have to (and indeed shouldn't) run in all guns blazing in order to reach the end of a level.

In Target lairs - the hideouts of the game's mysterious technologically advanced enemy - the expansiveness of the outdoors is swapped for a cramped network of corridors, where the army and militia are replaced by disciplined SWAT teams. Cover doesn't last half as long here, forcing a change of tactics. Within seconds of the safety coming off the guns, these areas become a mess of broken glass and fresh corpses, the resulting gameplay being much quicker in pace.

Downed enemies drop Intel orbs, which can be used to fuel special abilities. Adrenaline, for example, grants the player temporary invincibility. By shredding through cover and dispatching of your foes in unconventional ways, you'll earn more orbs. Chaining kills to together also goes down well, adding to a multiplyer of sorts. At the end of a level, you're graded on your performance and ranked alongside your chums on a leaderboard - not dissimilar to Bulletstorm's Skillshot system.

People Can Fly's foul-mouthed blood-fest proved that you don't have to be a serious military shooter to do well for yourself in the FPS market, which is a good sign for Codemasters. Bodycount does offer something different, but verbalising that to the masses is tricky. Thankfully, Wilson revealed that a Bodycount demo is on the cards.

Development hasn't been easy for the Guildford-based developer, which recently suffered a creative casualty with the loss of Stuart Black. But development is still going strong. "The words 'pure, focused, arcade shooter' are words that he was saying eighteen months ago," says Wilson "and they're words I'm still saying now. There are positives to come out of everything, and I'm really happy where we've ended up"

Lady Gaga is not the kind of person to be upstaged. Yet a quick glance at a recent slew of music videos, performances and magazine covers confirms that she is not always the centre of attention: her shoes are.

Tall, towering, gravity-defying and surreally bereft of heels, Lady Gaga's shoes have become one of the most enduring symbols of the popstress's unconventional sartorial style.

She accessorised with a ruby red pair of towering shoes for a Rolling Stone cover; she tumbled off another heel-free pair at Heathrow Airport and slipped into a white pair for her Alejandro video.

The man behind many of theseavant garde structures is Noritaka Tatehana, the Japanese shoe designer whose creations are at once bold and modern and rooted in traditional aesthetics.A rising star of the shoe design world, Tatehana - still only 25 and just one year out of university - makes fantastical creations that happily blur the boundaries of fashion, art and craftsmanship.

And his heels are just as likely to appear in art galleries as to adorn the feet of the famous: not only does he have a string of exhibitions already under his belt, but New York's FIT Museum snapped up his autumn/winter range last year for its permanent collection.

His latest collection of shoes, fashioned from laser-cut metallic leather, are displayed in an exhibition of his works at Trading Museum Comme des Garçons in Tokyo.

It was Ladies' Night at the Grammy Awards as Pink, Lady Gaga and Beyonce gave sensational performances during the ceremony.

The three stars had 17 nominations between them as they wowed the audience at the 52nd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Pink got her appearance off to a racy start as she descended from the ceiling wearing a skin-coloured catsuit to perform her song Glitter in the Air.

The singer was suspended in a white sling underneath her dancers wearing gold bikinis and gold body paint.

Just before she took to the stage the PA at the ceremony at the Staples Center warned people in the audience to beware of stunts in her performance and Pink did not disappoint and she sang and span at the same time.

At one stage Pink turned into a giant sprinkler system as she showered people in the front row seats with water.

Lady Gaga had earlier got the show off to a sizzling start with an eye-popping performance with Elton John.

The singer, who was nominated for five awards and won two during the pre-televised ceremony, kicked off the night in a sequined green leotard with massive shoulder pads as she sang her hit Poker Face during an elaborate show including pyrotechnics and dramatic choreography.

But then she brought out Elton John as they melded her song Speechless and his classic Your Song together in a performance that featured duelling pianos covered in clawed hands and glitter-painted faces.

As usual, Lady Gaga didn't disappoint fans of her eclectic outfits as she enjoyed several costume changes throughout her performance.

Her debut album The Fame picked up best dance/electronic album and smash hit single Poker Face took best dance recording.

Leading the way with 10 nominations, R&B singer Beyonce gave a typically energetic performance as she hit the stage with her hit If I Were A Boy.

Beyonce, who won five awards in 2004 for her debut album Dangerously In Love, had already reached that target earlier in the evening.

She scooped the songwriting award and best female vocal performance for Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), best R&B contemporary album for I Am.... Sasha Fierce, and won traditional R&B performance for At Last and the song of the year award.

Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson and Usher performed in the tribute, mixing their voices with Michael Jackson's against a backdrop of his 1995 track Earth Song.
